Americans like betting on their favorite sports teams, and jurisdictions benefit from the additional tax income generated by legal gambling. In the United States, sports betting is permitted in more than 2 dozen states; however, several only allow in-person wagering. The Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting more than three years ago, allowing states to authorize it if they so choose.
Nearly every state has contemplated legalizing sports betting, but due to deep-seated political resistance to gambling or complicated tribal relationships, complete internet sports betting will not be available in more than a dozen states for a long time. Currently, sports betting is permitted in around 30 states, with 18 of them allowing online sports betting. This means that more than 100 million Americans will be able to gamble regardless of where they live legally.
Since the Supreme Court rejected the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, the legalization of sports betting has spread across the country. Except in Nevada and a few other states, PASPA essentially made sports betting illegal. States have been permitted to legalize sports betting and create programs after the ban was overturned. The industry has been exploding and expanding at a breakneck pace. In the last year, the market has expanded from 19 states to 32, including Washington, DC.
Georgia, which has seen some action but no definite schedule for legalization, and Maine, which had a bill vetoed by the governor, extinguishing sports betting until at least 2022, are among the “possible” states for 2022. Many Americans are betting larger amounts of money than ever before as legalization spreads across the country. Ohio, Nebraska, and Wisconsin are all working on getting their programs up and running.
Last year, Florida legalized sports betting under a gambling agreement with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, expected to bring in $2.5 billion in tax revenue over five years. However, a federal judge struck down the agreement, stating that it violated federal Indian gambling laws and the state constitution. The tribe is appealing the decision, putting the state’s mobile sports betting market in jeopardy. In-person and online sports betting is now permitted in the following states in the United States:
