It’s Mindset Month for Raise Your Edge and today ‘bencb’ shares why the times of struggle in poker and life should be relished not avoided.
It’s difficult to think of a very successful person who had it easy growing up. As humans we’ve all experienced a certain amount of pain and struggle, but there seems to be an even greater amount of struggle and hardship that precedes success. Especially if you’re still in the early stages of developing a winning poker game and moving up in stakes, you’re likely to encounter a large amount of struggle and hardship along the way. Rather than allowing yourself to give up, understanding the necessity of this struggle is the path to success in poker as well as in life.
You do not deserve success (yet)
The idea or feeling of deserving success is a very slippery slope, especially if you are not successful yet. When we start to feel like we deserve this or that, our minds quickly become very entitled and we start to form assumptions about our future based on this entitlement.
For example, if you assume that because 2021 was a bad year for you, 2022 should be different or better in some way, you will subconsciously set standards and expectations for the year. When you run into an obstacle in January 2022, it will be easy to write off the year and think to yourself “do I really have to go through all of this again?”
Instead of setting expectations for your journey, embrace the day to day grind and work to separate yourself for the results. It’s also good to work on reframing the way you speak to yourself internally. If you find yourself feeling like you deserve success that you don’t have yet, try having a conversation with a friend about it (or just work through it internally on your own. It’s totally fine to vent your frustration every now and then, but focusing on the negativity that entitlement brings will destroy your ability to keep the daily grind going.
Face the friction
Inner conflict is the foundation of change and growth. By putting yourself in situations where you’re uncomfortable or uncertain you are actually rewiring your brain one decision at a time. These high stress environments require more decisions to be made, which results in faster growth and change.
For example, a common high stress environment can be a person’s childhood home. A child who comes home to a rough home life with angry parents shouting at each other every day will have to make more decisions than a child who comes home to a home cooked meal and happy parents. While the child with the rough home has to make decisions and adapt to unfamiliar and scary circumstances, the child with the loving home has many decisions made for them and can happily go with the flow of the family. This is why kids with rough upbringings tend to mature faster, they have had to make a lot more decisions than kids with easier lives.
Face the friction in life. Put yourself in situations where you’ll be uncomfortable, as this is the foundation by which we grow. Seeking out these uncomfortable and uncertain situations will put you on the fast track for change, you can rewire your brain simply by putting it in situations where it has to make more new decisions. Life may be difficult right now, but your outlook and perspective on things can change things a lot. Recognize that the adversity you’re going through now is sharpening the future version of you, one day at a time. Hardship is necessary for growth, and the decisions you make in these hard times will allow your mind to learn and change.

Pairrd App by Raise Your Edge
While checking out the most popular courses on our dedicated Raise Your Edge page, you should also have a look at their unique interactive studying tool Pairrd that is coming with engaging video quizzes, range drilling and hand review quizzes, all based on the most up to date GTO ranges out there.
An essential part when learning poker is the ability to think in ranges and understand the why behind them. Raise Your Edge does a great job of getting that across to their students, meticulously breaking down ranges and explaining the reasoning behind them.
However, memorising ranges is quite hard, and often the only way to learn is by making enough costly mistakes to see one’s errors. Thankfully, Raise Your Edge provides a powerful tool to circumvent that with Pairrd.
PokerStrategy.com editor Barry Carter has reviewed Pairrd and concluded about the merits of the innovative app:
“Pairrd is a unique interactive studying tool that provides something relatively new to the world of poker training, a way to practice spots without having to play them at the tables. It is essentially a dynamic way to make real poker decisions without risking money. Since most of us learn from experience, it’s a natural way to memorise the theory from Raise Your Edge.”
