It’s all tightened up again in the early stages of the 2021/22 League Two title race.
A surprise defeat for table toppers Forest Green at home to fellow promotion chasers Swindon means just six points now separate the top nine sides in this most tight-knit of divisions.
Can the league leaders make amends this weekend away at rock-bottom Scunthorpe Utd?
We’re here with our next set of League Two predictions…
EFL League Two Predictions | Weekend Games
After a false start to his career as an EFL head coach at Bristol Rovers, Ben Garner looks to be quietly re-building his reputation at Swindon.
Widely touted as one of the most innovative young coaches in English football on arrival at the Gas, his first stint in the South West failed to catch fire, but his methods seem to be the right match for the Robins.
Having made a real statement of intent away at the league leaders last weekend, Town could be value at 25/1 in the League Two outright betting given the pace of Garner’s turnaround job, rallying a club that looked to be readying itself for a relegation battle in pre-season.
A home game against out-of-form Rochdale could see the Robins move within a point of top spot this weekend, but Forest Green look unlikely to come unstuck for a second weekend a row as they travel to Scunthorpe Utd.
The Iron look in dire straits at the bottom of the table having sunk to a new low in their 6-1 hammering at Harrogate last weekend.
Neil Cox has problems to solve at both ends of the pitch with the Iron already prime candidates to be cut adrift in the battle to avoid relegation to the National League with his cause arguably not helped by the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’ from his chairman in midweek.
Elsewhere, could Sutton Utd be surprise candidates for a League One promotion challenge this season?
It’s not been uncommon for newly promoted sides to move straight through this division over the seasons, and Matt Gray’s side are the form team in the fourth tier having won five of their last six league matches. Maintaining that run won’t be easy in Sussex as they travel to a Crawley Town side yet to lose on home soil in league action this term under the irascible John Yems.
While Sutton look surprise packages, Salford City and Mansfield have reverted to type as the division’s two big underperformers this term.
The vastly experienced Gary Bowyer and Nigel Clough are both looking for the kind of result that could turn around their sides’ faltering campaigns but have challenging fixtures to navigate this weekend.
The Ammies will be looking for only a second win in six matches in all competitions as they take on a well-organised Hartlepool team, while a trip to Northampton looks tricky terrain for Clough as the Stags continue their hunt for a first league win since August.
Better Odds Mean Bigger Winnings.
