Dubai Devils with Carrigeen to both make an impact at Navan

Carrigeen could make an impact up in trip

With 22 runners in the 2m5f Handicap Hurdle, we can use the Extra Place Special and go down to five places, although there’s not an awful lot of form to go on.

Carrigeen Castle at double figures looks interesting on handicap debut tackling 2m5f for the first time. He’s certainly bred to get a trip as his dam was a 3m winner and with a couple of useful chasers in his pedigree, a mark of 95 is a low starting point.

There’s been little impact in his novice races, but there was a glimmer of ability at Navan on his debut over 2m last spring, and while he was beaten a fair way on his first run of the season, there was a little to work with.

He’s been well beaten in two starts and his novicey jumping has held him back, but today looks a suitable distance to tackle and he should be able to show a bit more.

Devils can go two places better

Dubai Devils is a thorough stayer and we might get a run for our money at 9/1 as the favourite All Class is sure to be shorter than a price you’d want to take, which tends to be the way with Ronan McNally’s runners. He could well win in his bid for the hat-trick, but 11/8 in a 15-runner chase is one to miss.

The selection finished sixth in last term’s Ulster National from 115, and he’s still hovering around the same mark for today’s race – in which he finished third in last term.

Heavy ground suits him well judged on his 18L romp at Fairyhouse 12 months ago, and he’s given an indication he is returning to form with a third at Limerick over a shorter distance than ideal, before a third at Limerick on his last outing. Different tactics were employed in that, and he was outpaced from off the pace – but he’s better with a more forward ride.

Mark McDonagh claims 7lb and he should be in the mix.
