Swing Or A Miss?
While it would be wrong to assess that the strikeout totals for both of Sunday’s starting pitchers are a 50-50 proposition, there certainly is enough evidence to make case for playing either side of each wager.
The strikeout totals for Los Angeles right-hander Max Scherzer are set at 7.5. He’s made two starts during the 2021 MLB postseason. In the NL Wild Card game against the St Louis Cardinals, Scherzer fanned just four batters. However, facing the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS, he rung up 10 San Francisco batters. Including one relief appearance, he’s struck out 16 in 12.1 innings pitched. That works out to 1.29 strikeouts per inning.

Over the course of his season, Scherzer has struck out 7.5 batters or more in 19 of 32 starts. But he’s done it only once over his last five starts. However, in two starts against the Braves, he mowed down nine hitters in each game.
For Braves right-hander Ian Anderson, the strikeout total is set at 4.5. In 26 starts, he’s gone over that number 16 times. He has managed to hit the over in four of his last five starts but in just three of his last nine trips to the bump.
Against the Dodgers on June 4, Anderson struck out six batters in 4.1 innings of work.
Picks: Max Scherzer over 7.5 strikeouts (+100); Ian Anderson over 4.5 strikeouts (+120).
Neither of the vaunted offenses for these two clubs show much of a track record for success against the two pitchers who will be toeing the rubber on Sunday.
Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman is just a .234 hitter (11-for-47) when facing Scherzer. However, it should be noted that the hitting line for the reigning NL MVP includes three home runs and four RBI.

Braves leftfielder Eddie Rosario is a .500 hitter (1-for-2) against Scherzer in a small sample size. He’s carrying a hot bat in the postseason. Rosario is batting .294 (5-for-17) in these playoffs.
No Dodgers player shows more than one career hit off of Anderson. Catcher Will Smith is displaying a power bat in the postseason. Three of his seven hits are home runs. But he’s 0-for-2 with a strikeout when facing Anderson.
Pick: Freddie Freeman +0.5 home runs (+350); Eddie Rosario +0.5 hits (-200).
