EFL Championship predictions

Thought parachute payments had made the 2021/22 EFL Championship a foregone conclusion? Think again.

With both West Brom and Fulham wobbling before the break, it seems it’s all to play for again in the fight for automatic promotion, with unbeaten Bournemouth strengthening their grip on top spot against Sheff United prior to the break. Can the Cherries pull further clear with victory at Bristol City?

We’re back with another set of Championship predictions….

EFL Championship Predictions | Weekend Games

Several eyebrows were raised when Scott Parker made what looked at the time a sideways move to the South Coast earlier this summer.

However, his gut instinct that Bournemouth might just be the best move for his career after a gruelling 12 months in the Premier League with Fulham currently looks inspired.

Despite the sale of key man Arnaut Danjuma in pre-season, Parker ultimately managed to keep hold of a core of players that look ready-made for a return to the elite.

Dominic Solanke and Philip Billing slotted home their seventh and fifth goals of the season in the 2-1 win at Sheffield Utd, and that rich vein of goalscoring form could put paid to Bristol City hopes of registering a first home win of the campaign.

Could Coventry City be worthy of consideration at 65/4 in the Championship outright betting?

The Sky Blues continue to be this season’s surprise packages having relished their return to the Ricoh Arena so far this term, clocking up their sixth win in a row on home turf with an eye-catching 4-1 win over Fulham. Mark Robins’ next objective will be to emulate that form on the road, starting at an unpredictable Blackburn Rovers this weekend.

Talking of Fulham, Marco Silva will be expecting a response as his chastened promotion chasers host QPR in Saturday’s early game.

EFL Championship 2021/22Ready for another round of EFL Championship action?

A soft underbelly ultimately cost the Cottagers their top-flight status last season, and a lack of fight under pressure still looks the one trait that could prevent a squad laden with talent bouncing back at the first attempt.

West Brom boss Valérien Ismaël also has some thinking to do after seeing his team deservedly surrender their unbeaten record to a potential rival in Stoke.

It’s a Midlands derby for the Baggies on Friday night as they host Birmingham, while the much-improved Potters travel to a Sheffield Utd still struggling to find their rhythm back at this level.

Another unwanted stint in League One potentially looked on the cards for Nottingham Forest a few weeks ago, but the feelgood factor is back around the City Ground following a bright start for new boss Steve Cooper.

The Welshman has made an instant impact in the East Midlands to help guide his new side clear of immediate danger, but Blackpool could blot his copybook this weekend. The Tangerines have lost just once in five away trips since winning promotion back into the second tier.

Imaginative thinking when it comes to managerial recruitment has served Barnsley well in recent seasons, but have they made a rare misstep with Markus Schopp?

The Tykes have reverted back to their usual relegation fight after a surprise dalliance with the play-offs last year, and having notched no wins since August, the Austrian can ill-afford another off-day from his side against a Reading team likely to be dragged back into the mix by a points deduction in the near future.

Derby County are no strangers to that scenario, but the cash-strapped Rams clawed themselves back closer to the survival fight by seeing off a Preston team that have forgotten how to win of late in the league under rookie boss Frankie McAvoy. With Mike Ashley reportedly already sniffing around the Rams after relinquishing control of Newcastle, it could be an interesting few weeks for Derby supporters.

Finally, under-fire Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy probably knows what fate will be awaiting him should he lose at the home of the Bluebirds’ deadly rivals Swansea City on Sunday.

Derby day defeat would make it six league defeats in a row for McCarthy and could be the tipping point that spells the end of his short-lived stay in the Welsh capital.
